COMPOST PRODUCTS

What you see growing are the stalks(mushrooms) of Mycorrhizal Fungi. They generally are in a symbiotic relationship with plants where water and nutrients are shared. This is important because they enhance the roots of growing plants by making connections that are not damaging. They can be thought of as extensions of roots as well as lifelines of nutrients & water in the soil back to plants. The relationship of Mycorrhizal Fungi is also important because it is a critical organism for reducing a number of stress conditions that may exist or develop in the soil.

HOW TO USE

FOR HOME COMPOSTING

The simplest way to compost is to create a pile or heap in the yard, tending to it as necessary. Situate it in a dry, shady spot close to a water source if possible.
  1. Clear a space in your yard or garden, exposing bare soil.
  2. Build a base layer of straw or twigs. A few inches help provide good drainage.
  3. Add layers of materials to be composted one at a time, alternating between brown and green materials.
  4. Incorporate Benefit Compost Primer to start decomposition. Open packet and sprinkle contents on the pile if using the single use packet. If using the large pack of Benefit Compost Primer, use 2-3 teaspoons sprinkled across the pile.
  5. Keep the pile moist. It’s recommended that the materials should feel like a damp sponge – wet enough that you can feel the water, but not so wet you can squeeze water out if you grab a handful.
  6. Turn the compost pile every couple of weeks to allow the center of the pile to “heat up”. Aeration provides oxygen to the microorganisms involved in the composting process and mixes the pile.

FOR COMMERCIAL COMPOSTING IN WINDROWS

  1. Apply base material where windrows are to be built
  2. Add Benefit Compost Primer at the rate of 1.5 pounds per 100 feet of windrow
  3. At the second turning of the windrow apply an additional 1.5 pounds per 100 feet of row
  4. Continue composting process until desired conditions are met.
